Inspiration for a Lifetime
Few experiences rival the power of truly entering another culture—feeling the emotions others experience; thinking with a mentality that was not your own; dreaming in another language; viewing the world through another’s eyes. PAX provides American high school students this opportunity.
Europe, South America, or Asia
You no doubt have an instinctual attraction to one or more program countries. Perhaps you find yourself drawn to the distinct tempo of Brazil, the old world charm of Germany, or the traditional approach of Spain. Maybe, the sheer beauty of Ecuador captured your imagination long ago; the French approach to food, art, and the absurd have always been compelling; or you have long thought that within the open and (at times) quaint Dutch culture is where you would most thrive. It could be that the exoticness of China intrigues you to no end.
Expand Your World
Wherever you go, the PAX experience will enrich your life in ways you never imagined. When travelling between the Chinese capital Beijing and its leading city of Shanghai, you’ll feel the weight of history while observing trends which will likely alter the shape of the world forever. By lounging on the French Riviera, you’ll finally understand the magic which has consumed authors and directors (along with their protagonists) for the last century. While sipping a coffee at a charming Sao Paulo café and tapping your foot to samba music, it will come to you: there is another way of approaching nearly every aspect of life; what’s possible is as limitless as your own imagination.
A Unique Educational Opportunity
Even in the more traditional academic sense, high school study in Europe, South America, or Asia goes far beyond textbooks or classrooms. History, art, politics, government, sociology, and language come to life as never expected when immersed in another culture, and your thoughts and insights carry new weight in the classroom. After all, you present a unique point of view while representing the United States for your friends and classmates.
There's a world of difference between simply visiting a country and actually living there. PAX provides students the chance to live another culture as a member of a host family. Your most powerful experiences could very well be the meals you share, the unassuming after dinner talk, and being shown what family means in another culture.
College Advantage and a Second Language
You’ll also achieve something few Americans do: the ability to speak another language well—a demonstrable skill that no one can take away. Of course, being able to point to the successful completion of a high school student exchange program will be a significant advantage when applying to universities. Likewise, having developed the confidence and maturity of a foreign exchange student will benefit you on a personal level when going away to college, claiming your independence, and shaping your future.
